Stress Relief and Essential Oils; Is there a Connection?

Medical studies reveal that yes, there is! These two published articles report significant benefits were derived from essential oils via inhalation.

Blood Pressure and Stress Responses

The first study (Hwang, 2006) sought to see "The effects of the inhalation method using essential oils on blood pressure and stress responses of clients with essential hypertension."

The study found that blood pressure, pulse, subjective stress, state anxiety and serum cortisol levels were affected significantly and subjectively when participants of the study inhaled essential oils.

This led to the conclusion the inhalation method is an effective nursing intervention for reducing psychological stress responses and serum levels and blood pressure of clients with high blood pressure.

Stress and Stress Responses in Adolescents

The second study (Seo, 2009) looked at "The effects of aromatherapy on stress and stress responses in adolescents".

The researchers gave 36 female high school students an aromatherapy pendant to wear. The control group had carrier oil on the pendant and the other group had essential oil.

The study found that stress levels and stress responses were "significantly lower" when the student had essential oil on the pendant, concluding that aroma inhalation could be "a very effective stress management method for high school students.
